Pencil Beam Technology
This technology
projects an x-ray beam straight down
toward the patient. The scan arm
moves vertically over the patient as the pencil beam scans back and forth
covering the width of the body. The
average scan time is 3 to 4 minutes with no radiation scatter and minimal
dosage.

Fan Beam Technology
This technology uses
an X-Ray beam that projects down in a fanned beam toward the patient. The scan arm needs only a single vertical
pass over the patient as the radiation is fanned across the width of the
patient. The average scan time is 30 to
90 seconds. The radiation exposure is
minimal, and many states require only that the operating tech wears a radiation
detection badge. The fan beam has some
very minute radiation scatter.
