Direct Digital Radiograply (DR) first appeared at RSNA 1996.  A simple unit with fixed geometry and limited applications priced between $350,000 to $450,000.

Today M.E.S. can offer fully featured articulating c-arms and overhead tube crane models for much, much less.

Progressive facilities are purchasing DR systems to improve efficiency with image display 3-6 seconds after exposure, sometimes even reducing the number of rooms and staff required.  Room turnover rates can improve from five or six exams per hour using film or CR equipment to 10 to 15 exams with DR equipment.   Patient recalls for repeat exams can almost be completely eliminated by reviewing images before subjects leave the exam room, as images are immediately viewable.
